Research

“Practical Innovation” is how UTS describes their approach to research. UTS strives to develop pioneering research solutions which have real benefits for both communities and industries in Australia and around the world.

The university has established a reputation for research in traditional as well emerging fields, ranging from the creative industries, nanotechnology and sustainability, with a number of research strength areas across the University that are recognised national and international leaders in their disciplines.

UTS is a member of the Australian Technology Network of universities which brings together five universities to build strategic partnerships to undertake relevant research, as well as educating graduates that are ready to enter their chosen profession. ATN universities teach around 180,000 students, or almost 20% of Australia’s student population.

With one in four international students choosing to study at an ATN university, they are the largest provider of international education, both with our onshore and offshore students.

UTS programs are taught by world-class researchers and practitioners, and students benefit from the best minds and most current practices in their fields.

Collaborative research leader

UTS collaborates with universities across Australia through Cooperative Research Centres. These centres bring together researchers from universities, government laboratories and industry to achieve real outcomes of national economic and social significance.

UTS is also a member of three Australian Research Centres of Excellence, which aim to develop Australia’s international standing in designated priority research areas.
UTS has also taken on a leadership role in significant national collaborative efforts including the Creative Industries Innovation Centre, the Australian Centre of Excellence for Local Government and the Intelligent Grid Cluster.

Research outcomes

Research at UTS is driven by a desire to produce that research that has societal, environmental and economic impact. Some recent research achievements include:

  • Developing an intelligent wheelchair which can be controlled by head movements or thought patterns, which has the potential to help people with severe disabilities.
  • UTS researchers developed Switch, Australia’s first hybrid car that can be charged from a normal power point, as well as feed power back into the electricity grid.
  • UTS is home to one of only two super-resolution DeltaVision OMX microscopes in the world. Researchers have used this equipment to capture never before seen images of cells dividing. They are now working on ways to prevent bacteria cells dividing, potentially changing the way we treat many diseases.

Students can find out more about the research degrees offered at UTS by visiting the University Graduate School website.
